Capitalism vs. Socialism… Which One is Biblical?

Some people would say that socialism is better than capitalism because socialism seeks to care for the needs of all the people; whereas capitalism is selfish and only looks out for the individual. But what does God’s Word say about these two opposing philosophies?

We first we need to define the terms “capitalism”; it is an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market. (Merriam Webster).

Socialism is defined as any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods. 2: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property. (Merriam Webster) So then the question could be asked. Which philosophy is supported by the bible; private ownership of property or public ownership of property?

I think the answer to this question is very clear in scripture; God said ”Thou shalt not steal, and “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor’s.” (Exodus 20: 17) These scriptures make clear that private ownership of property is ordained, by God, sacred, and important to God. Also, others scriptures warn again any attempt to steal or defraud a person of their private property.

Deuteronomy 19:14, 27:17. Proverbs 22:28. 23:10 prohibits stealing private land by moving established landmarks. Also, God gave specific laws concerning the inheritance and transfer of private property; (Numbers 27).This is why the “death tax” is unbiblical.

There is nowhere in all of Jesus’ teachings on money and wealth, do we find Him suggesting that stealing or taking a person’s private property against their will is right. In addition, the apostle Paul set the example and made it clear that Christians are expected to not steal, to work with their own hands to earn a living and demonstrate their faith; except when unable; (e.g. elderly, disabled or minor children). (2 The 3:10, Eph 4:28) Some might suggest that the early church modeled an example of socialism and public ownership when some of them sold their private property and pooled their resources so that no one was lacking;( Acts 2-5). But, even in this event, private property was willfully sold and donated by the owners, not taken; these were acts of “Charity”. Finally, we are warned that thieves will not inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

So then socialism is the opposite of capitalism or private ownership. The question then becomes, how does a society in which the biblical and historical values of private ownership and inheritance is in place, move to a new socialist system of public ownership? Well, there is but one way. That is by theft. This theft whether done by individuals thugs (by mugging, or mafia shakedowns) or by a left-leaning liberal government (by excessive taxation, penalties, extortion, or takeover) is still a violation of God’s command “Thou shall not steal”. In the Bible as a case and point, of the violation of God’s laws, we have the examples of Queen Jezebel and King Ahab in the Old Testament. They violated God’s laws and were severely punished by God. By first Ahab coveted another man’s private property, they Jezebel had the owner framed and murdered, afterward taking his private property (I Kings 21). Also, in the New Testament Jesus affirms the teachings of the Old Testament in His response to the rich young ruler; (Mark 10:9; Luke 18:20). In short, socialism which takes people private property is unbiblical, unjust, unrighteous, and ungodly.

So, anybody who calls themselves a Christian and supports ideas of socialism is simply not in line with scripture or the will of God. Anybody, whether they are a preacher, politician or private citizen, who speaks against the virtues of private enterprise, job creation, individual work, and charity is not in the will of God and is being driven by ungodly motives. You must not call yourself a follower of Jesus Christ and be in support of socialism. Otherwise, you are operating in the spirit of Ahab and Jezebel and should be warned that according to scripture you will be judged just as they were. So, if you are a Christian and have found yourself following the philosophy of Socialism and being led by this murdering and thieving spirit of Jezebel, I urge you to repent. Also, if you have never repented of your sins and accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, I urge you to do so today. God loves you and sent His son to die on the cross for you (John 3:16) If you do, you will receive the free gift of salvation, He will accept you and you will no longer face judgment, eternal punishment, and separation from God, but you will receive eternal life. Blessings!

  1. Communism is radical socialism. Karl Marx was a radical atheist and the founder of scientific socialism. He was expelled from countries and governments and a college for drunkenness. His famous motto is “religion is the opium of the people.” Opium is a drug and pain killer. He opposed Jews and Christians and denied Jesus. He preached his religion was the opiate of the people and to keep people sedated so they will not rise up and change the condition. The Iranian soldiers in the army are on drugs. The military is based on mindless obedience. About eighty percent of the world’s opiate pain medication are consumed in America. Karl Marx is the most assigned economist in colleges. Be alert, sober, rise up and use your mind and make the most of every chance you get and vote for God policies. These are desperate times. Jesus and the Bible is the truth and then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

  2. Is it possible to be a Christian a Christ follower and believe in equality, Black Lives Matter, living wage, the environment, denounce greed, denounce racism, denounce a small number of people owning all the wealth, to believe college should be free and accessable to all. Housing and safety should be everyone right. Is it not Christian to pray for all those things. Is it not Christian to pray to ask white Americans to face their real history. Does wanting those ideals mean one is a communist and not a Christian?

    Deutoronomy 15:11
For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’
‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

    Proverbs 21:13
Whoever closes his ear to the cry of the poor will himself call out and not be answered.

    James 1:27
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

    Isaiah 58:10
If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.

    Luke 14:12-14
He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

    Sandy: what are God’s policy’s. ?

    1. Thank you for bringing up these scriptures. It’s very true that God cares for the poor, and he uses those who do have to help those who don’t. Yet the problem with socialism is that it doesn’t give you the option to give from your own property because the government takes everything ( which is a form of greed) and distributes it of how it sees fit. God loves a cheerful giver, but if you don’t own anything how can you give?
